Supplies You’ll Need to Make Your Bordered Tea Towel:

  • Plain tea towel without hem;
  • Printed 100% cotton fabric for patchwork;
  • Colored head quilting pins;
  • 100% polyester or 100% cotton sewing thread;
  • Patchwork ruler;
  • Sewing scissors;
  • Sewing machine;
  • Iron;

Right now, a roll of plain white tea towel fabric measuring 27.5 inches x 32 feet is around $20. That means you could make up to 20 plain tea towels, spending about $1 per towel.

Of course, there’s the cost of your labor, and if you buy online, you’ll need to consider shipping. But even with those variables, the final cost can still be very attractive. Do your math!

Let’s get to the tutorial…

Time to Cut the Fabrics for Our Tea Towel!

For the tea towel, we’re cutting a white fabric piece of 20 inches x 27.5 inches.

And now, let’s cut the borders! The border measurements depend on the size you chose for your tea towel.

I used different fabrics: one with cows and another with cow spots. We’ll use one border on each end of the tea towel.

Pinning the Borders to the Base Fabric.

Now, match the right side of the printed fabric with the wrong side of the tea towel and pin everything carefully.

Repeat the process on the other end, using the other fabric with the spots. Make sure everything is aligned, okay?

Attention to detail makes all the difference in the final result.

Sewing the Borders to the Tea Towel.

With everything aligned and secured, let’s sew a simple seam, close to the edge. This seam will attach the borders to our tea towel.

Turning the Border to the Right Side.

After sewing, turn the border to the right side, showing off all the cuteness of the cows. Absolutely adorable, right?

Ironing to Make Everything Neat.

To give it a flawless finish, iron the fabric with a warm iron. This way, we get everything smooth and wrinkle-free.

Sewing the Top Part of the Border.

Now, let’s make a small fold inward on the top part of the printed fabric and then sew a seam.

This fold ensures a perfect and professional finish.

Finishing the Sides of Our Tea Towel.

To finish the sides, we fold a small edge to the wrong side and sew a seam. This gives it a flawless finish and prevents the fabric from fraying.
